Nisqually Indian Tribe

Food Services Directory

Background

Initially, Trio Group worked with the Nisqually Indian Tribe to produce their Health Department Resource Guide in 2016. After the success of the Heath Department Resource Guide, two years later we were tasked with producing a similarly designed booklet for the Nisqually Tribe’s Food Services.

Strategy

We worked with Caitlin Krenn, Nisqually Tribe Community Garden Supervisor, to adapt the Health Department Resource Guide into a Directory of Food Services Guide. Caitlin’s goal was to create a booklet that would be provided to tribal members experiencing food insecurity.

Design

The original Health Department guide was 8.5 x 11”, but for the Food Services Guide we reduced the size to 5.5 x 8.5.” We also designed the cover of the guide to be friendly and approachable to the Nisqually Tribal community by featuring a photo of a smiling local fisherman and including headlines like a magazine.

We used blue-tinted cedar bark photography on the cover and the footer to represent the Nisqually Tribe’s identity as the “people of the river and grass,” since the tribe traditionally harvest their food from the Nisqually River and the prairies around the river.

We removed the background image and left the background white to draw attention to the colorful imagery in the food services guide. Most of the photos used in the guide were original photos provided by the Nisqually Tribe depicting community members participating in food-related programs, and photos of their fresh local salmon, fruits, and vegetables.  We also selected high-quality stock imagery to supplement the rest of the guide.

Execution

Trio Group printed the guide saddle-stitched on 100 lb. gloss text between 100 lb. gloss cover stock. We delivered the booklets directly to the health department who distributed them to tribal members.

Evaluation

The guide was met with positive reviews for its fresh, vibrant imagery and easy-to-use design.
